Ruby Rose in my opinion is a Static character and that's perfectly fine. Characters can obviously be a mix of both, especially as time progresses, but generally speaking they're going to lean toward one or the other. Dynamic characters are changed by the characters/circumstances around them, and Static characters change the characters/circumstances around them. Stories with Dynamic characters generally center around how they're effected by the changes in their life while the story of a Static character centers around how they react to the changes. Dynamic characters which go through some sort of positive/negative character arc by the end of the story, and Static characters which stay relatively the same from beginning to end. There are generally considered only two types of characters. This thread is based off one that I had written shortly before Volume 6 aired, and with me being a strong proponent of RWBY being a character driven show and currently focusing on writing mechanics and philosophy as I work on a novel, I thought I'd share my opinion of Static characters and flat character arcs, and why contrary to popular belief there's nothing wrong with them.
